After a mis-spent youth, St Vitalis went on a long pilgrimage and then became a Benedictine monk, leading a life of complete poverty at the hermitage of  Santa Maria di Viole near Assisi.

He died there on 31st May, 1370, and miracles were then recorded at his tomb.

The relics of St Vitalis were translated from the church of San Vitale at Viole to San Rufino in 1586.  They remained there until 2001, when they were translated back to Viole.

St Vitalis established a confraternity on Mount Subasio before 1362.  It moved to the Oratorio di San Vitale at the end of the 14th century.
