This master is named for an unfinished fresco of the Crucifixion in SS Severo e Martirio (see below).

Crucifixion with the Virgin and saints (13th century)

This unfinished fresco, which is the autograph work of the Maestro dei SS Severo e Martirio, is in the apse of the upper church of the Abbazia dei SS Severo e Martirio.  It depicts the Crucifixion with the Virgin and SS Mary Magdalene, John the Evangelist and John the Baptist.

The frescoes in San Giovenale that are are attributed to the Maestro dei SS Severo e Martirio include:

   
   

Those on the upper part of the first column on the left, which depict:

  1. the Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John the Evangelist;

  2. St Francis;

  3. St Dominic; and

  4.  a female saint (not illustrated); and

     

Those on the upper part of the first column on the left, which depict: :

  1. the Annunciation;

  2. the Visitation (illustrated); and

  3. a bishop saint, perhaps St Juvenal (not illustrated).
