According to Suetonius, Octavian/ Augustus (in addition to his own extensive programme of public works at Rome):
“... often urged other prominent men to adorn the City with new monuments or to restore and embellish old ones. Many such works were [undertaken] by many men at that time ... , [including] the temple of Hercules Musarum, by [L.] Marcius Philippus, [who triumphed ex Africa in 33 BC] ...”, (‘Life of Augustus’, 29).
